Yes, these facts you point out combined with what we have seen in public from various shows and meetups (SIME 09 for example) in the world point to a Nokia without a clear future. Seems like they build the future on the past glory. Classic dinosaur method to me. I wish they can turn the ship before it's too late. Or is it already?

[...] Chairman Meow is a believer in Apple way of doing business: Many have been commenting that Google’s (or Nokia’s or Microsoft’s) ecosystems are more “open” or “flexible” with respect to Apple’s. And that in the long run that is the right architecture. That may be, however implementing loose ecosystems coupled loosely to modular devices and operating systems and services as a whole will not be competitive. They will be too late, too slow and too hard to use. They will be awkward to position and the benefits will be impossible to explain to end users. They will be sold through a distribution channel that is too long and with poor information feedback. Too many “vested” interests will dilute the product’s reason for being. The pricing of the integrated player will cause poor economies for the modular cohort. I could go on but it suffices to say that the modular approach will fail to be competitive. [...]

Good post Tapio. This classic Five Forces thinking is flawed (even academics agree - see http://sps.org.uk/library_show.php?id=366&type=9). Only truly independent thinking combined with flexibility to change will give advantage, rather than trying to predict the unpredictable to match your original strategy.

Excellent post Tapio.

Now you know why I quit being an industry analyst. If you don't know you're being paid to validate someone's version of truth, you're naive. If you know and drink the kool aid, you're intellectually dishonest. If you know and don't care, you're ethically dishonest.

three strikes......

for whats its worth, 99% of the open/closed debate is inside baseball in the tech industry. All my middle school daughter and primary school son know is that Apple is genius level cool.

$612 vs $90 ASP makes all the difference. Nokia needs to stop making low-end devices their core focus and take back market share in major world markets, especially the US. Their arrogance in the late 90s and early 00s starting with their refusal to manufacture flip phones for the US market effectively destroyed their market share in developed countries. The iPhone is such a big success because of 1) street hype - Nokia, you could learn something here from Apple!, 2) aspirational marketing, singular focus on making the best product, not many mediocre products, 3) combination with iPod and 3) effective next generation UI. Nokia used to be the king of mobile UI in a keypad-driven world. But the world has changed, technology has evolved an once again, Nokia has missed the boat and dug in to proven platforms rather than taking a leap of faith into the future - or god forbid, just following its competitors!

Nota Bene, Spotify's 6M users are probably mostly freebies as Spotify's annual reports cited revenue lesser than a small pizzeria in Sweden. And their model is also subscription based, if not tied to a specific hardware, still a monthly fee.

In the case of Nokia, you get the subscription for 'free' if you buy a phone and after a year you can renew it. The €0.80 per track model is flawed as well. It has worked well with iTunes, but does it work anywhere else? and from a phone discover and pay €0.80, hmmm.. tough.

There is certainly trouble with music. however, streaming music to a device vs storing in the device, the latter has to be the option unless you wanna drain the battery and/or inflict unnecessary bandwidth usage (which can be costly for the carrier given unlimited dataplans). Alternatively, the quality of the music has to be compromised (64k transfer vs 512k-1M).
