Elizabeth Schimel joins Nokia

Elizabeth Schimel has joined Nokia to head up their music business unit under Tero Ojanpera (Entertainment and Communities). This was a long-anticipated move from Nokia – their music business had for perhaps too long been managed by Finns and Englishmen who had perhaps not their ‘DNA’ in the music business. The time is now critical for Nokia as the music industry shift into digital distribution accelerates. This is not any longer an incubation activity but real revenues need to flow in pretty soon.

Elizabeth joins Nokia from senior positions at Comcast and AT&T. According to her Facebook profile she indeed seems to know everyone in the music business .

Harry Santamäki leaves Nokia

Harry Santamäki, one of the more out-of-box thinking Nokia executives and VP Business development at Nokia Multimedia left the company on January 1. He was instrumental in developing Nokia’s search and mobile marketing services from scratch into commercial product. Harry will now focus on consulting and pursuing new venture opportunities. The man has been around: after all his company Vistacom developed the first all-in-one ISDN videophone sometime in the late 80s (how many of you even know what ISDN is?). Harry’s network and ability to innovate is undisputed… and much better you might guess by his website;-0.

Matthew Snyder Leaves Nokia to Found Adostrategies

Matthew Snyder, one of the most versatile Americans I know has left the Nokia camp. I got to know Matt in 2003 when doing a consulting project for Nokia. Matt has an amazing past of 18 years in Japan and part of it in the holiest of them all product development teams of Sony. From being a half-Japanese he jumped over to trying to be half-Finnish – how many Americans have you seen try to pull that off? Matt roamed the world building Nokia’s search and mobile marketing businesses from scratch. His perseverance and bulldozer energy earned him the nickname ‘Ariel Sharon’ by friends in his Jewish community. Matt is now doing his own startup, AdoStrategies.

Carl Bressler is at it again

My friend Carl Bressler took an impressive four year sabbatical after selling his company and now he is back in business again. This time around he is looking to venture into movie production as well as angel investing in technology and media companies.

Chris Dorr joins Nokia

Chris Dorr has joined Nokia as Head of Global Video Partnerships. Chris will be working in the team of Tero Ojanpera (EVP, Entertainment and Communities). He joins Nokia from Sony Connect where he held a similar position. Chris works with the movie and TV industries worldwide to set up partnerships in this fairly nascent unit of Nokia. ‘Internet video’ partnerships such as Youtube-type deals are usually handled by other people at Nokia.
