This morning Motorola surprised the Wall Street with somewhat positive earnings story. Immediately the press reacts to it as if this dying manufacturer buoyed by their bet on Android would be so kind of a new success story… This is in stark contrast to what reaction Nokia gets these days. After all to me Nokia is the real turnaround story in teh upcoming 12 months – you will see. http://bit.ly/9D5see

Not much of a surprise if you look at the stock chart. The company had a brief bump in price but it’s back down now. Motorola is now 7th in market share (below Apple). They sold about 2.2 million Android phones and another 6.3 million dumb phones. The dumb phone business will continue to evaporate faster than the smartphone business will grow. I don’t see how their Android products will stand out vs. HTC. The “Droid” brand belongs to Verizon and they are now putting it on HTC white label devices. http://blog.asymco.com/2010/04/30/rim-and-apple-now-ranked-4-and-6-in-phone-market-shares/
